Survey Reveals Preferences in Ballet and Musical Theater Among Korean Audiences

A recent survey on stage arts, including musicals and ballet, highlighted a significant preference for proven classics and masterpieces. When respondents were asked about their favorite artists, noticeable differences emerged between genders. Male artists showed a clear top-tier dominance, whereas female artists had the top 2-3 sharing similar levels of support.
In a ballet repertoire preference poll, the year-end favorite The Nutcracker ranked first, garnering 116 votes (31.7%). Following closely was Swan Lake with 101 votes (27.6%), and in third place was Giselle with 65 votes (17.8%). Notably, the top two works are considered classics based on Tchaikovskys music, sharing both popularity and symbolic significance.
The survey also revealed stark contrasts in dancer preferences based on gender. In the male dancer category, Ji-Min Chul, a first soloist with the Mariinsky Ballet, overwhelmingly secured the top position, receiving support from 167 out of 366 respondents, translating to a 45.6% approval rating. In second place was Kim Ki-Min, a principal dancer from the same company, with 90 votes (24.6%), followed by Lim Sun-Woo, a new principal dancer with the Universal Ballet, in third place with 25 votes (6.8%).
For the female dancer category, Park Se-Eun, an étoile with the Paris Opera Ballet, took the top spot with 90 votes (24.6%). She was followed by Kang Mi-Sun, a longstanding figure in the domestic ballet scene, in second place with 58 votes (15.8%), and Kim Ji-Young in third place with 45 votes (12.8%).
In the realm of musicals, preferences leaned heavily towards familiar masterpieces. The most favored musical among Korean audiences was The Phantom of the Opera, with 75 votes (20.5%). This trend reflects an overall inclination towards established and popular works, indicating a strong cultural connection to these timeless performances.
